Police arrest importer of fireworks in Lagos

THE importer of fireworks popularly called ‘banger’ which wreaked havoc in Lagos on Boxing Day, celebrated the new year in police custody. The Lagos State Police Command arrested him a few days ago.
The Guardian learnt the suspect was arrested on the order of the Commissioner of Police, Alhaji Umar Manko who was miffed over the destruction of houses and properties worth millions of naira by the inferno caused by the fireworks.
The suspect, Semilore Olalekan was arrested on Lagos Island by the command to answer questions that would assist the police in unraveling the incident.
It was learnt that Olalekan had the permission of the Commissioner of Police Explosive Ordinance Department (EOD) of Nigeria Police Anti-Bomb Disposal Unit, Mr. Foluso Adebanjo and the office of the National Security Adviser (NSA) to import the firework.
It was further gathered that he was not new in the business of fireworks importation as he began the business in 1998. He was given a recent permit to import the ones he stored in a warehouse which wreaked havoc in August 2012.
No fewer than 15 houses and dozens of cars were burnt on Boxing Day in an early morning inferno caused by the fireworks belonging to the suspect in Jankara area of Isale-Eko, Lagos.
The fire started from a building,which served as a warehouse for the fireworks and spread to other buildings around the area.
