Leader of the Boko Haram sect Imam Abubakar Shekau hails from Niger Republic, according to the report of a Senate joint committee that investigated the deadly violence in Baga town of Borno State in April.  This is shocking.  Isn't it?

THIS WEEK'S BIBLE REFLECTION - Luke 16:19-3.

Jesus preaches today on the wrong use of our gifts, especially wealth. He uses the story of Lazarus and the rich man to teach us. In Nigeria, for instance, where we have so much wealth but over 90% of the people live below the poverty line, the government and the clergy compete for private jets, convoys of jeeps and choice properties with money belonging to the people. This cannot continue. We are overheating the system and it will soon burst. Let us be on guard! Also read Jeremiah 17:5-10; Psalm 1:1-4, 6. PRAYER: 'LORD, help me to always reach out to people who are less fortunate, to people who due to certain circumstances beyond their control have become unable to cater for themselves, to people who earnestly wish to work but could not find jobs, to people who would gladly do business but lack the capital and the ideas, to people who look up to me for care and provision. Also help me to manage in justice the commonwealth entrusted to me. In Jesus Mighty Name. Amen'.

You haven’t done well with oil money, Clinton tells Nigeria

bill-clinton

• Seeks return of intellectuals overseas
IT was a stark reminder of the wastefulness of the nation’s leaders as former United States (U.S.) President Bill Clinton declared that Nigeria had failed to properly use her rich natural resources.
Clinton did not mince words as he told Nigeria: “You haven’t done well with your oil money.”
According to Clinton, Nigeria cannot afford to fail because if she does, the consequences for Africa would be disastrous. He challenged Nigerian leaders to create economic opportunities for the majority of the citizens.
The former U.S. president spoke while answering stakeholders’ questions at the 18th This Day Awards organised by the This Day Newspaper management to honour 18 teachers for their commitment to duty. The well-attended event was held at the June 12 Cultural Centre, Abeokuta.

Why our society is underdeveloped

Garbage

THE society is a reflection of the aggregate of values and priorities of its members. There are few things around us, both good and bad, that did not originate as a ‘thought’ in the mind of an individual or group of individuals. Consequently, if some societies are ordered and relatively more qualitative while others are in disarray, this is a direct result of the (in)actions of the inhabitants of these societies.
If you are an African, ask yourself these simple questions, and the reason for the dire circumstance of the mother continent will come home to you. Have you ever,
1. Entered a packed banking hall and instead of joining the queue, sought out the ‘sister of your friend’s cousin’ who happens to work somewhere in the building, in order to circumvent the queue and in the process increase the misery of those doing it the right way by prolonging their waiting times
2. Driven against the flow of traffic simply because it looks expedient at the time
3. Given money to the ubiquitous civil servant to ensure that your document gets signed on the same day, when the standard procedure is to wait for two weeks
4. Induced a police officer to look the other way because your car papers are not in order and you are too sloppy to attend to it
5. Manipulated the system to obtain admission for your ward, knowing full well that s/he did not merit such consideration, and in so doing deprive a better qualified candidate the opportunity
6. Known a friend/family member living ostensibly above their means and legitimate income and rather than question the anomaly, asked for your share of the unexplained windfall
7. Voted for someone simply because s/he is from your geographical region, religion, speaks the same language and other such spurious reasons, rather than the merit and fitness of the person
8. Heaped curses and abuses on your Local Government Chairperson, governor and president, and on that single occasion you had audience with the idiot, became a wimp and instead spewed false adulations on him, calling him ‘the best thing since sliced bread....’
9. Evaded tax and duties, and then went ahead to bribe the Revenue Officer to issue you a fraudulent Tax Clearance Certificate
10. Obtained a drivers licence without actually being to a testing ground and passing the prescribed practice test
11. Paid less to clear your goods at the port
12. When caught-out one way or the other, is your disposition to take full responsibility for your actions or to immediately start thinking/looking for who can/will bail you out/shield you from the natural consequence of your actions
13. Turned-up late for work and blamed a non-existent traffic congestion
14. Are you the ultimate custodian of the ‘African Time’, always late for appointments
15. Do you live only to enjoy the titillations of your five senses, no matter the negative effect of your ‘enjoyment’ on others and society
16. Are you an academic but have not contributed anything to the body-stock of knowledge; your specialization is indolence and college politics
17. Taken money to vote in a particular way instead of voting your conscience
18. Covered the truth, thwarted the truth or hinder the arbiter of the truth for your own selfish/sinister motives
19. Held others to a higher ‘code of conduct’ than you demand of yourself
20. Taken money or other valuables under false pretences and justified it on the grounds of ‘this is the way it is done here...’
21. Having done the above, did you then enter the church/mosque or other religious congregation and gave testimonies of ‘God’s (or Allah’s) goodness’
22. Are you an integral part of your society’s problem and you do not even realise it
If ever, you answered ‘yes’ to many of the preceding posers, you have no ground to stand on and criticize your representatives; they after all represent what you stand for, your modus operandi, your values and your reward systems. The (wo)man to criticize and change is the one looking back at you in the mirror.

Police Still Collects Graft at Mowe

police_search

On Friday January 11, 2013, I boarded a taxi from Mowe, Ogun State to Owode-Egba. I was going to honour a pre-scheduled official meeting with the local Immunization Officer at the General Hospital in Obafemi-Owode Local Government Headquarters.
I‘d been warned that the road from Mowe to Ofada town is bad, so I opted to join the public mode of transportation. As soon as I got to the park, I was sandwiched with someone else in the front (passenger’s) seat. Soon I began to have some form of paraesthesia and it didn’t help that my co-passenger had a child on her lap. Four other passengers soon came and sat at the back and we were on our way. I was still aching in the discomfort and agony when we were treated to the rigour of the road. It also lived up to its reputation.

I was sure that a headache was imminent when around a junction in the Ashimolowo area of Mowe town, we were ordered to stop by fully dressed members of Nigeria Police. The ensuing event was like a miracle to me.
“Oga, I no get change oo.” The driver said in a coarse tone that seemed to indicate that the conversation had begun a long time ago.
“Ok. Ok.” The police officer replied, nodding his head.
“Shebi you know shey na hundred hundred naira.” He said and he spat on the ground.
“I no get change wey pass two hundred naira oo.”
The phlegm contained a mixture of sputum and some dirty brown colour that has come to characterize the indiscipline and contempt of the Nigeria Police in my mind.

The driver extended a two hundred naira note to the police officer whose shirt was so badly damaged that I could see neither his name nor his number. He pocketed the money with his left hand in broad daylight and then produced a change of a hundred naira from the right side of his trouser which he handed over to the driver.

I was battling with this scene until the driver informed us that the scene had been going on for more than a month. “E no go better for them!!” He cursed and he too spat outside. I watched as the sputum flew away into the harmattan.

One of the passengers in the taxi with me was so angry that he queried why the police officer did not inquire about the license of the driver. He was angry that the police officer was not interested in the license of the vehicle or any of the driver’s papers for that matter. He was angry that he did not check the general state of the vehicle in the least and that he was not even concerned about the number of the passengers in the taxi. He kept complaining that the Police Officer was more interested in the one hundred naira graft than in anything else. He even questioned if road block was part of the job description for police officers in Nigeria?

Somehow our attention turned on the driver. The people in the taxi agreed almost unanimously that they were not too sure if the driver had valid driving papers, since it was still early in January. Of course, the driver pretended as if he didn’t hear us.
“Oga, abeg no trouble me oo.” he said in pidgin English. “I no dey there oo.”

As long as the prevailing circumstance in laws and policies governing transportation remains the same in Nigeria, we shall remain where we are.
The issue of incomplete and invalid driving papers will disappear if the government will collaborate with the drivers’ associations.
The government can find a way to collate the entire licenses, permits, levies and all other papers affecting drivers and other road users and appoint some official, who will liaise with the NURTW local associations, meet with their opinion leaders and register these drivers easily at ‘affordable rates’ in their local places. The idea is to find a way to bring the government to the people. I guarantee that all public drivers will be fully registered within a week in the process. Regular education of our drivers on the right use of the road is also needed and helpful.

Although people have stressed it continually, the total road network needs to be completely overhauled. The salary structure of the Nigerian Police also needs to be reviewed. And disciplinary measures need to be upheld.

Someone joked at the back of the taxi at the expense of the driver.
“Na him be Jonathan wey make fuel price cost pass?” We all laughed. He continued, “Or you no know shey the driver’s wife carry belle?”
We knew instinctively that he was trying to hint that the driver would be more concerned with footing the bills for the Naming Ceremony of his child and buying PMS at #110 per litre at the filling station rather than renewing his driver’s license and other road papers.

I am not sure if the National Assembly has re-visited the Nigerian Police Act and added a routine road check as part of their duty. I’m also not sure if the Inspector General of Police in Nigeria has re-ordered his ‘boys’ to go back to our roads and re-establish the illegal act of collect ‘twenty – twenty naira’ from our ‘Danfo’ drivers.
I guess these questions need answers.

Possible solutions to our failed higher institutions

RUFAI

THE National Universities Commission Executive Secretary, Professor Julius Okojie recently noted that sixty per cent or more of our lecturers are without P.H.D degrees. What right to good quality of education does this give us the future leaders of this great country? In what ways does this prepare us for the unknown, unpredictable future? I think it is time we start asking ourselves this questions.
The earlier we as one people realise that we can’t heal what we refuse to confront, the earlier we begin on our own journey to the rehabilitation of this once flourishing and bright education sector. It hurts to find that our educational institutions especially our colleges and universities are behind international standards in technology, research, development amongst many other things that have crippled the system.
A country without quality education is synonymous to a system without a driving force, I mean a dead system. Education is a light that sheds the path to an unpredictable future, a future that will consider our methods of the present as primitive, just exactly the way we consider the past. It should not be compromised or short-changed for excessive looting of the country’s resources, or the excessive payment of government officials.
Is there a solution to this delicate problem that might be putting the future of this country at a great risk? Personally, ‘yes’ is the answer to this sensitive question. But as one people, one nation, the decision completely depends on us. The moment we say ‘yes’ then we just unwrapped our determination to make things work for this precious sector of ours. We will also be showing the zeal in laying a solid foundation in education for generations yet unborn. When we as a people decide to confront the sector’s problems and ills, then we can be rest assured that we are starting to clean up the mess that has been piled and stacked over the decades.
Let us assume we all as one people end up saying yes. How do we go about this transformation of the educational sector especially that of the higher institutions? What policies and structures are we to put in place to make this intended transformation a stunning reality? Why don’t we take a journey into history and try to figure out what brought upon us this predicament and then proffer solutions to each of them.
Political instability will be the first thing that comes to mind. Ever since the year of Independence till the end of the military era in 1999, we have experienced gross political instability. The ever recurring military succession and coups have contributed as a major factor that has affected our educational systems negatively. Even in this present Nigeria where we practise democracy instabilities in our leadership. We do not have long term Ministers of Education; they spend just a short period of time performing their duties before they are being replaced by another. Usually, one comes on board and just decides to change everything according his or her taste without considering the changes and policies that the previous Minister had kept in place and it goes on and on. To solve the problem of leadership instability is to prevent the future Ministers of Education and all other people from changing policies and structures that have been kept in place without necessary or important reason.
Another point that comes to mind is the inadequate fund provided to the higher institutions. And even the funds provided by the government are not channelled properly due to corruption and excessive looting at every level. My solution to this problem might sound absurd, but if properly considered is worth a shot. Students in higher education institution should be billed heavily, in this way the public institutions will be able to run their institutions without waiting for grants and funds from the government. The only way in which the government comes in, is by giving financial aid and scholarships to students who are in need or exceptionally gifted either in extracurricular activities or academics. In this way, the school will have sufficient money to run the school and technologically develop themselves by being able to afford modern research equipments and machinery. The institutions will also be able to send their lecturers to gather more experiences and the modern way of doing things from world renowned universities. In this way many things will fall in place. After the students who borrowed one financial aid or the other graduate and get jobs, they then start paying back to the government with very little interest rate depending on their jobs. With this method the quality of education will greatly increase.
Let us ponder on the benefits of the method described above:
1) A significant increase in the quality of education is quickly felt and seen by everybody.
2) These prevent Nigerian parents from wasting millions of dollars every year in sending their children and wards to school outside this great nation Nigeria. This is implying that this money will now be spent in the country instead of outside.
3) The higher institutions will now be able to expand and increase their maximum intake of students every year. This will in turn reduce the pressure on students every year during the JAMB exams and also reduce the cut-off points entering various universities in the country.
4) Talented and well gifted professors who are gurus in their various fields and are Nigerians who also lecture abroad will be attracted to their country.
5) The educational institutions will attract foreign students who will definitely pay more. In this way the university generates more money for further development.
6) The alumni who turn out to be very important people in the world will then end up given back to the schools and increasing their reputations.
I think as one people we should ponder about this, because the situation of our world depends on us. We are the determinants of our own world, we should always remember that.

Boko Haram’s activities not reflective of Islamic faith, says Aregbesola

THE Boko Haram terrorism in northern Nigeria is casting a pessimistic outlook on the future and fate of the country, but the terror group’s activities should not be perceived as a reflection of the Islamic faith, according to Governor Rauf Aregbesola of Osun State.
In fact, the governor warned that other parts of the country might soon be engulfed in similar crisis as now happening in the North because of what he described as Nigeria’s “indolent elite.”
Speaking on Wednesday evening at the Harvard University, Aregbesola noted that while the “murderous activities” of Boko Haram continues to disturb the nation and fuelling pessimism, any interpretation of the terror group as a religious expression is a mis-reading of the crisis.
According to him, “other parts of the country are embroiled in varying degrees of violence and will soon catch up with the North, except effective leadership emerges at the national and local levels. The report of the murderous activities of a religious group in the North, Boko Haram, has been disturbing, fuelling pessimism on the fate of the country.”
Aregbesola addressed scholars, students, diplomats, policy- makers and Nigerians in the Diaspora while presenting a paper at the university during the Nigeria in the World Seminar Series hosted by Nigeria-born Harvard professor of Religion, Jacob Olupona.
In a paper titled, Nigeria: The Challenge of Development, Aregbesola observed that projecting religious face of Boko Haram ignores a political manipulation by a political elite. To him, the sect “is essentially the manipulation of religion to achieve certain political ends. Unfortunately, the politicisation of religion has been a persistent characteristic of our national existence, with its attendant challenge to our development effort.”
He lambasted the political leadership, hanging the major blame for Nigeria’s lack of development on its set of leaders, stating: “Years of misrule have made religion a handy tool for the manipulation of the people by the ruling elite.”

• President’s wife tasks N’Assembly over N4b mansion
• He can contest, says Fasehun
DESPITE a claim by President Goodluck Jonathan that campaigning for the 2015 election is diversionary, what appears like a tacit endorsement of his candidature for the race came Thursday with Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Women Leader, Ambassador Kema Chikwe, saying that the wing of the ruling political grouping would persuade him to contest.
Also, his wife, Mrs. Patience Jonathan, urged the National Assembly to pass the N4 billion budget for the building of African First Ladies’ mansion.
On his part, the leader of Oodua People’s Congress (OPC), Dr. Fredrick Fasehun, appealed to Nigerians to allow Jonathan go for the 2015 presidential race.

Jonathan, Clinton, Fashola, others laud Eko Atlantic City project

Jona_clinton

• Govt to replicate project in Abuja, Kano
• Plans national mortgage finance firm
TRIBUTES to the human will and intelligence to conquer nature reverberated in Lagos Thursday as leaders stood in awe of the Eko Atlantic City, located inside the Atlantic Ocean-end of the state.
The Eko Atlantic City was described as a project equal to any other of its type from any part of the world.
President Goodluck Jonathan, who was at the laying of the dedication stone for the five million square metre-Eko Atlantic City project, explained that the corporation would be driven by a Public Private Partnership that would also involve international financiers.
On the occasion, Jonathan announced the launch of a national mortgage finance corporation to address the country’s over 16 million housing shortfall.
He disclosed that the World Bank had already provided $300 million to kick-start the company even as major stakeholders involved in the project would include Mortgage Banking Association of Nigeria (MBAN), local and foreign bodies such as Federal Ministry of Finance, Federal Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the World Bank.
“We believe this will provide the much-needed liquidity that has been lacking in the mortgage sector as well as solve the problem of high interest rates. The housing sector has its peculiar challenges and that is why the Federal Government, a few weeks ago, organised a private sector retreat where it was agreed that the revival of the mortgage sector was paramount to solving the national housing problem.”
The Federal Government, according to him, has been meeting with all the states in the country so as to fast-track the process of land titling which has also been a drawback to housing.
The event, which drew a large audience, comprising captains of the industry, policy makers and traditional rulers, was hosted by the Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Raji Fashola, who was elated to see the project becoming a reality. According to the governor, nature has lost again to the supremacy of human spirit and intelligence.
Also at the event were former governors of the state, Admiral Ndubuisi Kanu, Alhaji Lateef Kayode Jakande and Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who initiated the project in 2003. The business community was led by Alhaji Aliko Dangote, Oba Otudeko and others.
Fashola recalled that the project had been raising a lot of questions, for the right reasons, all over the world. “It is beyond the civil and engineering master-piece on display, but I see more the determined effort and spirit to conquer nature. This project is one of the major accomplishments of man in the moulds of airplane, Euro-tunnel, the Egyptian pyramid and so on.”
He, however, lamented where, due to man’s negligence, nature had been allowed to fight back, referring specifically to a case of the century-old Apapa Ports. He insisted that man must not submit to nature.
“This project is not finished, but it is already a success story”, said Fashola, who stressed the restoration of businesses along the Victoria Island corridor, even after what looked hopeless in 2003 massive flooding of the area.
Disclosing that the Federal Government planned similar projects in Abuja and Kano, Jonathan stressed that government at the centre would not be beaten by the success of the Eko Atlantic City. “This project is a continuation of good news narrative that has been sweeping the country such as the recent victory at the African Nations Cup and revival of the Lagos to Kano rail.”
The special guest at the event, former President of the United States, Bill Clinton, who spoke to the gathering, commended the project and stressed that it would be an international tourist attraction.
“No one is strong or wealthy enough to solve all the world’s problems; but it is through the collective efforts of people that make a difference. And I urge you to continue. I am convinced a lot of people will want to come and see this place".

Reasoning with Pope Benedict XVI

Reasoning with Pope Benedict XVI

By Mike Nsikak Umoh

Pope Benedict XVI shocked the Church and the world when he announced on Monday, the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes, his decision to resign from the highly exalted office he occupied since 19 April, 2005 as the Vicar of Christ and the Bishop of Rome, come February 28, 2013. Since then there have been no ending in the media to the torrents of commentaries, stories, reportage, photo-clips on the Pope, his times, the Church as a whole and many more. While some people, even well-meaning Catholics, have expressed disappointment at the Pope’s action, and in spite of pockets of conspiracy theories here and there, the reactions from official ecclesiastical and secular quarters have been largely positive. However, some people are simply not able to come to terms with the idea of a retired Pope. They consider it a thing akin to a sacrilege. The questions agitating such minds are:  Why will the Pope act in this manner? How are we to explain this strange action? What does it portend for the Church and the world?

In this piece, I wish to highlight some points which may help us better understand the circumstances that could have informed the pope’s decision.

1.      OLDEST POPE IN 300 YEARS: When Benedict XVI became the Pope, he was already 78 years, which made him the oldest person to assume that office in the past 300 years. We will recall that his predecessor, Pope John Paul II became the Pope at the age of 57 and died at the age of 84. Meanwhile Pope Benedict XVI will turn 86 years by 16 April 2013.

2.      BACKBONE OF POPE JOHN PAUL II: Before being called to the Vatican, Pope Benedict XVI, then Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, was a professor of theology and a Vatican II expert. He contributed enormously to the Papacy of John Paul II as the Prefect of the Congregation for Doctrine and Faith for 24 years; 1981 to 2005.  This is a key department in the entire life and administrative set up of the Church. Therefore, one may not be fair in celebrating the success of the great Pope John Paul II without giving some due credit to Pope Benedict XVI.  The implication so far from the above is that Pope Benedict XVI was already well-spent and tired before he became the Pope.

3.      SACRIFICE: From the points above, one may wonder why Pope Benedict was chosen or why he still accepted to be the Pope if he knew he was tired. The answer lies in some factors considered in the process of appointing a Pope. When a Pope dies, or in this case, when the seat if vacant, the Cardinals in conclave are led in a retreat which helps them, among other things, become more vividly aware of the needs of the Church at the particular age and time, and what should be the Church’s major form of witness to the world at the time. Besides, unlike many secular bodies and governments, the Catholic Church is built on continuity. Therefore due to the high level of achievement recorded during the long reign of Pope John Paul II, the Cardinals at the April 2005 conclave reasoned that there was need to elect someone who was closest in thoughts to Pope John Paul II to manage the papacy. The most fitted for the description as the votes turned out was Cardinal Ratzinger who accepted the office with trepidation but a high sense of sacrifice. It was a huge sacrifice for him because severally before that time, he had expressed his desire to resign from being the Prefect of the Congregation he managed. He was even more desperate to retire after the death of his great friend John Paul II. In a sense therefore, one may say that the papacy of Pope Benedict XVI is an extension of that of Pope John Paul II. It seems to me that Pope John II’s era that started in 1981 is just coming to an end.

4.      HEROIC ACT OF LEADERSHIP: Pope Benedict’s action speaks volume of his maturity, self-confidence, sincerity of purpose, humility and above all his ardent FAITH in God and his love for the holy Church. Faith, because he firmly believes that the Church is first and foremost truly divine, though also human. The Pope’s action manifests his humble acknowledgement that the burden of the Church essentially rests on the outstretched arms of Jesus Christ on the cross and not on any human shoulders. It is a lesson to all those in leadership position whether in Church or the secular society, that it could be unjust and self-serving to stay on in power when one realizes that he is no longer efficient or effective in the office. It takes a lot of grace, maturity and intelligence to come to this knowledge and enormous courage to accept it. In this context, one recalls the message in that great but short prayer; Lord grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference.

5.      CHRIST MUST INCREASE, I MUST DECREASE: Reading the script of his resignation, the Holy Father mentioned his failing health as a core reason he decided to resign. Some conspiracy theorists have interpreted this to mean that he has some terminal deceases. Commonsensically, a man of 85 who has handled such huge and busy office is definitely old enough to be physically incapacitated. The salient point that however needs to be pointed out here is that the Pope is not necessarily concerned about his health in the sense that he is afraid that if he continues in the office, he might soon die; rather his concern is the good and progress of the life of the Church. He realizes how very crucial the services required of the office of the Vicar of Christ are, he realizes that no one must be a stumbling block to the work of Christ, he therefore chose not to allow his physical weakness to hinder or slow it down. In an age where human beings will do anything and everything to hold on to power, as we experience in Nigeria and many countries, it is strange to see a man freely give up power and all the paraphernalia that goes with it. As already noted above, a very deep implication from this action is a profound profession of faith. Perhaps that is also the reason he declared a year of faith. By this action, Pope Benedict teaches everyone that the burden of the Church does not essentially rest on any human shoulders, but on the outstretched arms of Jesus on the cross. The Church is the body of Christ; the work is the work of Christ; the flock is the flock of Christ; in life or death we belong to Christ. Christ is the center and Christ is all. He has promised he would always guide and protect his Church. The gift of His Holy Spirit is constantly renewed in her. Consequently, the message is that what matters most is for the work of God to advance, no one needs pretend that the Church will collapse without him.

6.      CANONICAL PROVISION: A major reason why many people in the Church and the world are shocked at Pope Benedict’s resignation is because it is a rare occurrence. In the over 2000 years of the papacy, it is not usual to see a Pope resign. It is however pertinent to remind us that the Canon law, the body of laws guiding the life of the Church, makes provision for a serving Pope to be able to resign if he so wishes. Canon 332 paragraph 2 gives three conditions: First, that the resignation is freely expressed; secondly, that it be adequately manifested; and thirdly, that the process is valid whether anyone accepts it or not. This is what Pope Benedict applied. Thus he is acting within the law of the Church. Pope Benedict’s resignation is historic not only because it is up to 600 years ago when Pope Gregory XII resigned as a Pope in 1415, but because it seems it is the first time a pope is resigning simply because he is old and physically incapable, totally of his own volition and not forced by factors or circumstances outside of him. One expects that this action will rub positively on the attitude of office holders in Church and society.

Moreover, because of the unprecedented nature of this event, Christ’s faithful look forward to the Cardinals to know how the Pope is to be addressed after resignation. Would he be called “Pope Emeritus” or “Emeritus Bishop of Rome”?

7.      NO SURPRISE: Much as the Pope’s action is shocking, it has not come as a complete surprise to those who are conversant with the life and works of this strong-willed and erudite Pope. His predecessor was at the verge of resignation in 2000. In his book, "In the Light of Faith”, written in 2010, Pope Benedict says “If a pope clearly realizes that he is no longer physically, psychologically and spiritually capable of handling the duties of his office, then he has a right, and under some circumstances, also an obligation to resign." What's interesting is how long ago this decision was made -- shortly after the pope's trip to Cuba, which was in March of last year, he manifested so much tiredness and desire to resign. Against the conspiracy theory that the Pope is forced out of power because of the controversies and scandals that have been orchestrated against the Church out of proportion in and by the media, it is instructive to note that was before the whole butler story even broke. Problems have always been in the Church. Problems will remain in the Church because it is made up of human beings. Jesus knew this. That is why he promised that the Spirit will be with her so that the gates of the underworld will not prevail against her. Pope Benedict has opened the doors for successive popes and even Bishops if need be to resign with greater ease without feeling morally obliged to remain until death.

In conclusion, the Church at this threshold of history calls her children and all men and women of goodwill to prayer: for the body of Christ, for the Pope and for the Cardinals who will soon be in conclave. Come Holy Spirit and fill the hearts of your faithful, and enkindle in us the fire of your love.

Explosion Kills 1, Injures Policeman In Lagos

A man identified as Pius Oladele reported to be the chairman of sand dredgers in Amuwo-Odofin area of Lagos was, yesterday, killed by what is suspected to be an explosive device planted under the Amuwo-Festac link bridge.
Although it could not be ascertained who planted the explosive which went off at about 11.35am killing Oladele and injuring a policeman who came to visit the deceased under the bridge (popularly called Miracle Beach) residents ran in different directions claiming it was the dreaded Boko Haram sect that planted it.
Addressing the residents that gathered to ascertain what happened, the commissioner of police, Lagos State, Umar Manko, urged Lagosians not to panic, and described it as “a minor explosive of which the police have began investigations to unearth the source and those behind the crime”.
An eye witness, Adeola Peters, also a sand miner and close associate of the deceased, told newsmen that he (the deceased) resumed for work, yesterday morning under the bridge, and having parked his white Pathfinder jeep with registration LSR 957 AZ, made for his usual position.
It was gathered that thirty minutes later, a call was said to have come into his cell phone which necessitated his driving out only to return accompanied by a policeman in his car.
Upon settling down at his usual position, the deceased was said to have called one of his loyalists simply identified as Dogo, to buy ‘Alomo Bitters’, a local gin which he shared with his police friend.
Moments after the policeman made to leave, a loud explosion was heard which shattered Oladele, killing him at the spot, injuring the policeman who had moved a few steps away before the device connected with dry cell batteries and wires detonated.
Dogo, the deceased’s loyalist, described Oladele as a kind hearted man. This was just as he condoled his family of two wives and five children.
Meanwhile, the scene of the explosion had been cordoned off by the Bomb Disposal Unit of the Nigeria police with officials of the Lagos state Emergency Management Agency also on ground to unravel the cause of the explosion.

INSIGHT

Life is 60% spiritual and 40% physical. Man is a spirit living in a body. Why do we spend all our time behaving as if life starts and ends with the flesh?

ON THE PROPHECY OF THE POPES

The Prophecy of the Popes, attributed to Saint Malachy, is a list of 112 short phrases in Latin. They purport to describe each of the Catholic popes (along with a few anti-popes), beginning with Pope Celestine II (elected in 1143) and
concluding with a pope described in the prophecy as “Peter the Roman”, whose pontificate will end in the destruction of the city of Rome.
What is most interesting about this
prophecy is that the current pontiff, Pope Benedict XVI (listed as the “Glory of the Olive” – Benedict is the founder of the Benedictine monks whose symbol is the olive branch) is the last Pope before Peter
... the Roman. Tying this in with other aspects of Catholic eschatology (the study of the end times) which generally describes a great apostasy in the Church prior to the second coming of Christ, many Catholics believe that we are now in the end times and that the next pope will be the last before the final judgment.
Here is the text of the prophecy as it relates to the final Pope:
“In the last persecution of the Holy Roman Church, Peter the Roman will hold the see (lit. “sit”), who will pasture his sheep in many tribulations: and when these things
are finished, the city of seven hills [Rome] will be destroyed, and the terrible judge will judge his people. The End.”
WHAT IS MY OPINION ON THIS ISSUE?
1. It is a prophecy.
2. Every living Christian is filled with the Holy Spirit and endowed with the gift of Discernment.
3. Jesus Christ, our Lord and Master, has asked us not to be afraid. Psalm 23 says "Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil ..." Why? "For you are with me ..."
4. When we talk about death, rapture or end of the world, what should concern us as Christians should be whether we are in a prepared state to meet the Bridegroom. We should be less concerned with various reviews and emotional outbursts.
5. There are some things we would in our present state not be able to understand. We should be careful not to blaspheme.
6. Satan and all his supporters cannot prevail agaist a Church purchased with the precious blood of Jesus Christ.
7. There are three types of people in the world: those who make things happen, those who watch things happen and make loud comments, those who do not even know that things are happening. Which group do I fall into?

R.I.P: ‘Music is a jealous lover’

R.I.P: ‘Music is a jealous lover’

Jawo Jawo singer, Goldie, died last Thursday after an extremely brief illness. Saturday Mirror pays tribute to her memory by reprinting our last interview with her by YEMISI ADENIRAN at the height of the success of her album, Gold, which was released by Kennis Music
Can you tell us about the new single you are about to drop into the market?
The new single, I tell you will be a thriller. I can assure you that all my fans will love it. It is a massive club banger and it has the Nigerian thing in it. It is titled, ‘Don’t touch my body’ and it was produced by SARS. I am putting enough efforts to push out the song and get it across to everybody. I know my fans would love it.
Why are you making serious efforts to push out the song? Is it not natural for good songs to circulate ordinarily?
That is one of the problems we have in this country. As an artiste, you should always make efforts to push out your songs.
There is nothing wrong in pushing my songs and, making sure they get to the appropriate quarters. I am a very talented person and I believe in getting the perfect result every time. If you hear the song, you yourself would love it. It cuts across all age grades. I can assure you by God’s grace that in a matter of weeks, it will become an anthem.
How would you appraise your career since you were signed on to Kennis Music?
It has been on the positive side. Just like other artistes he has handled, I am enjoying myself and my career is enjoying a lift. Long before now, Mr. Kenny Ogungbe, the Chief Executive Officer of Kennis Music and I have always toyed with the idea of working together since I came into the Nigerian music scene.
But I guess the timing wasn’t convenient. I have always admired him from afar. His vision, his passion, his drive and the discipline he instils in all his artistes is apparent by how successful each one of them has become even after they have left Kennis. He had rubbed some of these on me and I believe more are still in the waiting for me. I’m happy to say Kennis Music is like a family to me. Ogungbe is like a father to us all; he inspires me on a daily basis.
How would you describe your takeoff period in music?
It was fun but a bit hectic. You know I had no management support and was faced with the responsibility of dealing with the creative aspect and the managerial aspect all by myself. That wasn’t easy at all. These days though, with the support of my record company, things have become easier.
Your video clips are enjoying massive airplay, how do you feel?
I feel extremely grateful to God for His love, grace and mercies. He has allowed me the opportunity to showcase my talent and spread the gospel of good music and quality videos worldwide. It is a blessing. I also appreciate all the radio and television programmes presenters who play my videos all the time, the DJs and all. I really can’t thank them enough.
You are hot and really sexy. What is the secret?
I’m glad you think I’m sexy. I will attribute my sexy appearance to my innate trait of self confidence and my hotness to the good eating habit and regular exercise that I keep to. I also try as much as possible to wear clothes that suit and flatter my body type. Overall, I guess God is responsible for all that I enjoy.
Who are your role models in the industry?
I love every individual who has raised the bar and set standards high by virtue of their hard work. I wouldn’t call them role models per say. Among the artistes, I admire P-square for their doggedness.
Years after almost everybody had concluded that they would not go far, they surprised everyone. I admire D’banj also for his hard work and consistence, Weird Mc for her unapologetic approach to her craft, Tuface for drawing international awareness to the Nigerian music scene, Ojb Jezreel for his artistry and support of young talents and many others.
What are the challenges you face on this job?
Well, I’m not really one to dwell on challenges. I see them as stepping stones to reach a higher platform in life.
What message were you trying to pass across in your song with Eldee, Gboko lowo re, gbomo lowo re?
The song and its lyrics were a playful spoof, it was meant to entertain only and nothing else. It will be amazing to have it misinterpreted. The phrases: Gboko lowo re and Gbomo lowo re are commonly used by many of us on a daily basis. We used it purely for the basis of entertainment.
What do you do apart from music?
Music is a very time consuming and jealous lover, which I have extreme love and passion for. Right now, I have little room for much else. Music is my passion and my focus; that is what I’m dedicated to right now.
What advice do you have for aspiring young female artistes?
I will advise them to be extremely confident, kind-hearted, hardworking, prayerful and passionate about what they love doing. They should take their time to discover their passion and stick to it. They should not allow anyone to intimidate them over it.
Are you in a relationship or searching?
I have never searched. Everything good has always come to me by hard work and diligence. But for the records, I am in a relationship and I am very happy in it; I love my partner and I’m loved back in return.
How much did Jawo video cost you?
Jawo video was shot on location at The Palms by renowned video director, Clarence Peters. I have no idea of the amount paid in the commissioning of the video as it was a direct transmission between the CEO of Kennis Music and Clarence Peters.
What word do you have for your fans?
I will just thank them for their support and undying love. I am where and what I am today partly because of them and for this, I’m extremely grateful.

Yero wants Muslims, Christians to co-exist in Kaduna

GOVERNOR of Kaduna State, Mukhtar Ramallan Yero, has lamented the division of Kaduna metropolis along religious lines, saying that such development should cease as it encourages mutual suspicion.
The division of Kaduna metropolis into north and south, which made both Muslims and Christians to pitch their homes accordingly in their respective geographical location, was fuelled by the Sharia riots of year 2000 and other crises in the state.
In a statement issued by his Director-General, Media and Publicity, Mallam Ahmed Maiyaki, the governor, while hosting the Inter-faith Mediation Group led by Pastor James Wuye, alongside foreign delegates in Sir Kashim Ibrahim House, Kaduna, explained that “the metropolis is divided along, before and after the bridge, with residents always cautious when crossing to the other side, which is not healthy.”

However, he said “the government would, through legal means, utilise religious and group leaders to ensure that people of different faiths live peacefully with one another.”

Catholics mark Ash Wednesday

CATHOLICS all over the world will on Wednesday, February 13, 2013 mark this year’s Ash Wednesday, signifying the commencement of the 40-day Lenten Season.
According to Msgr. Gabriel Osu, spokesman for the Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos, “Ash Wednesday ushers in the Lenten Season, a 40-day period of penance, reflection and fasting which prepares us for Christ’s resurrection on Easter Sunday. It is a period of conversion, self- denial, renewal, reconciliation, change and growth; it is about denying self for the life of others.”
A major hallmark of Ash Wednesday, Osu said, is the marking of the forehead of Catholic faithful with ashes, making the “sign of the cross” as a reminder of their sinful nature.

Police deny killing MASSOB members

logo-massob_1

CITING falsehood, the Anambra State Police Command Monday refuted allegations in some newspapers (not The Guardian) by the Movement for the Actualisation of Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) that some of the 19 corpses recovered at the Ezu River, Amensea, in the state, were murdered by its operatives.
The state Commissioner of Police, Ballah Nasarawa, at a press briefing said that MASSOB was making the allegation because the Command had succeeded in checking its excesses in the state.
MASSOB had petitioned the United Nations (UN) and President Goodluck Jonathan, alleging the gruesome murder of nine of its members by the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) in Awkuzu, Anambra State.
The movement said nine members arrested at its Onitsha office by security agents on November 9, 2012 include Basil Ogbu, Michael Ogwu, Sunday Omogo, Philip Nwankpa, Eze Ndubisi, Ewuka Eze, Obinna Ofor, Joseph Udoh and Uchechukwu Eguofor.

EFCC re-arraigns Fani-Kayode as Alao-Akala, Babalakin tackle fraud, debt charges

efcc-kayode

THE Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Monday re-arraigned a former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, before a Federal High Court, Lagos, over alleged money laundering.
Fani-Kayode, who is facing a 47-count charge bordering essentially on money laundering and misappropriation of fund, had earlier pleaded not guilty.
When the case came up for hearing yesterday before Justice Rita Ofili-Ajumogobia, he also pleaded not guilty to all the counts.
His lawyer, Chief Ladi Williams (SAN), had urged the court to allow the accused continue with the bail conditions granted by Justice Ramat Mohammed, the initial trial judge.
He also told the court to allow the accused to travel abroad at will for medical check-up, adding that the second trial judge, Justice Binta Murtala Nyako, had granted such leave to him.
The application for bail was not opposed by the prosecutor, Mr. Nelson Okedinachi, who subsequently requested for a trial date.
Ofili-Ajumogobia, in her ruling, allowed the accused to continue with the earlier bail granted by Mohammed.
She adjourned the case to March 11, 12 and 13 for trial.

Pope resigns, Turkson, others in race as successor

Benedict-3

• Benedict cites old age, steps down Feb. 28
• New Pontiff emerges before March 31
IT was a stunning decision that was made more dramatic because of its unexpectedness: Pope Benedict XVI’s announcement Monday that he would resign.
The 85-year-old Pope, who served the notice just two days to Ash Wednesday, the traditional start of 40 days fasting by his one billion faithful worldwide, leading to Easter, cited old age for his resignation. This is happening for the first time in about 600 years when a similar step was taken by Pope Gregory XII in 1415.
The development paved the way for bookmakers yesterday to tip Peter Turkson of Ghana and Marc Ouellet of Canada as among the cardinals likely to take over from Pope Benedict XVI.
The German-born Pope said he would step down on February 28, which will make him the first Pontiff to resign in centuries.
“I have come to the certainty that my strengths, due to an advanced age, are no longer suited to an adequate exercise of the Petrine ministry,” the Pope said in a speech delivered in Latin at a meeting of cardinals in the Vatican.
Dressed in red vestments and his voice barely audible as he read from a written text, the Pope made the announcement in a hall in his residence - the Apostolic Palace next to St. Peter’s Square.
Vatican spokesman, Federico Lombardi, said he expected a conclave of cardinals to be held in March within 15 or 20 days of the resignation and a new Pope elected before Easter Sunday on March 31.
Benedict, an academic theologian who has written numerous books, including a trilogy on the life of Jesus Christ that he completed last Christmas, will retire to a monastery within the Vatican walls.
“In order to govern the ship of Saint Peter and proclaim the Gospel, both strength of mind and body are necessary, strength which in the last few months, has deteriorated in me to the extent that I have had to recognise my incapacity to adequately fulfil the ministry entrusted to me,” the Pope said.
“For this reason, and well aware of the seriousness of this act, with full freedom, I declare that I renounce the ministry of Bishop of Rome, Successor of Saint Peter, entrusted to me by the Cardinals on April 19, 2005, in such a way, that as from February 28, 2013 at 20:00 hours (1900 GMT), the See of Rome, the See of Saint Peter, will be vacant and a Conclave to elect the new Supreme Pontiff will have to be convoked,” he said.

President Goodluck Jonathan has succumbed to pressure from state governors to share accruals into the Excess Crude Account, ECA, with the approval of the disbursement of $1bn to the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, FCT.

Briefing State House correspondents yesterday at the end of the 45th meeting of the National Economic Council, NEC, in Abuja, Rivers State Governor, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, said the Minister of State for Finance, Dr. Yerima Ngama, reported to the council that the ECA had a balance of $9.24bn after the $1bn subsidy payments.
“The minister also told the council that the President had approved the distribution of $1bn among the 36 states and FCT to enable them to execute more people-oriented projects in line with the government’s Transformation Agenda and the need to deliver more democracy dividends,” Amaechi said.

State of the nation: Southern leaders insist on national conference

State of the nation: Southern leaders insist on national conference

…Ekwueme, Clark, Gbonigi demand state creation, LG autonomy
The Southern Nigeria Peoples Assembly, SNPA, yesterday called for the convocation of a national conference for the resolution of some of the problems threatening the existence of the country.
The SNPA also declared that the ongoing constitutional amendment by the National Assembly was akin to usurping the sovereign rights of Nigerians to produce a people-oriented constitution.
Arising from its second General Assembly in Enugu, the SNPA also said that with the recognition of the six geo-political zones by the constitution as the federating units, the creation of states and local governments should be the responsibility of the zonal federating units.
These positions were made known in the 13-point communiqué issued at the end of the summit signed by Dr. Alex Ekwueme, Chairman (South-East), Chief Edwin Clark, Coordinating Chairman (South- South) and Bishop Emmanuel Gbonigi, Co-Chairman (South-West).

Outrage as pension funds’ fraudster gets two-year sentence

Fraudster

CAN the nation’s laws really fight corruption? This poser Monday ran through reactions to a two-year jail term given to a man who confessed to embezzling N23.3 billion belonging to the Police Pension Board (PPB).
A former head of the PPB, Yakubu Yusufu, got the sentence from an Abuja High Court.
The court also gave him the option of paying N750, 000 and walking away a free man. But it ordered that Yusufu forfeits a property valued at N325 million.
Yusufu, the eighth accused person on the charge sheet specifically pleaded guilty to counts 18, 19 and 20 wherein he was alleged to have connived with Mr. Essai Dangabar, Atiku Abubakar Kigo, Ahmed Inuwa Wada, Mrs. Veronica Ulonma, Sani Habila Zira, Mrs. Uzoma Cyril Attang and Mr. Christian Madubuike, to convert the sums of N24.2 billion, N1.3 billion and N1.7 billion respectively, belonging to the Pension Office to their own use, an offence punishable under Section 309 of the Penal Code Act, Cap 532, Laws of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, Nigeria 2007.

We have adopted this measure as a result of the hardship women and children are subjected to.”
He added that members of the Boko Haram should relate the ceasefire message to those “who are not aware or informed of today’s (Monday) development.”

Oyinlola: PDP no longer at ease

Oyinlola: PDP no longer at ease

The sack of former governor of Osun State, Olagunsoye Oyinlola as the National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) last Friday by a Federal High Court has further threatens to tear apart the ‘big umbrella’ and put in disarray the self acclaimed ‘biggest party in Africa’. OLAJIDE OMOJOLOMOJU writes on the intrigues surrounding the development.
For a long time to come, the centre may continue to be scattered in the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which had prided itself as the largest party in Africa. The reason for this may not be unconnected with the sack from office of the party’s National Secretary, Olagunsoye Oyinlola, by an Abuja Federal High Court last Friday and his consequent removal by the National Chairman, Bamanga Tukur.
As things stand, the party seemed polarised along two factions: the loyalists of President Goodluck Jonathan on the one hand and that of former President Olusegun Obasanjo/PDP governors on the other hand.
The bone of contention is nothing but the 2015 presidential ticket of the party. Prior to the PDP 2012 national convention, the party zoned its national offices to different geo-political zones.

Many NYSC members can’t read, write –DG

Many NYSC members can’t read, write –DG

The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, Brigadier General Nnamdi Okore-Affia, yesterday said there were many corps members who could neither read nor write.
The DG, who made the disclosure at the opening of the 2013 Batch ‘A’ Pre-Mobilisation Workshop holding in Ilorin, Kwara State, however, promised that institutions producing half-baked graduates for NYSC would henceforth be sanctioned.
Okore-Affia, who painted a sordid picture of illiterate- graduates churned out by the universities and polytechnics, said this had culminated in mass rejection of corps members in their places of primary assignment.
He said: “We have corps members who can hardly communicate in English Language, let alone being able to teach in the classrooms. The level of academic deficiency among corps members has heightened corps members’ rejection and redundancy.
“This worrisome development has resulted in a situation whereby members of the public wrongly condemn the NYSC for the poor academic standard displayed by these corps members.”

Nigerian celebrities buying fake Twitter followers...lol!

So I got a mail yesterday from an IT person revealing a lot about what some of our Nigerian celebs are doing on Twitter. Quite a number of them are artificially inflating their Twitter followers to make themselves appear popular online. It's like a big competition now; who has the most followers, who has the biggest fans etc...hehe!

I have names and numbers...and how much some of them are paying to get these fake followers, but I will leave all that out, there's no point! :-). One celeb went from 73k followers to 150k followers in less than one week. Choi! Lol. They do it in a way that people who are following them do not even know they are following them, and when you find out you are following them, you can't even unfollow them. But the good thing about it is that the Twitter accounts they target are mostly those of foreigners. And it cost less N1.5k per follower..in case anyone is interested...:-)

US presidential candidate, Mitt Romney, was recently called out for his fake twitter followers and Youtube recently stripped 2 billion views from Justin Bieber, Rihanna, Beyonce, Rita Ora, Michael Jackson's videos on its site amid fears the figures were artificial inflated.
