Most Paid Nigerian Entertainers 2012!

They’re making money as if it’s going out of fashion; controlling assets that are making some oil tycoons want to consider a career switch. They’re living the real celeb life – hopping from private jets to limited edition cars and SUVs.

With minimum earnings about N6.5M per month, and highest incomes nearing N50m per month in some cases, these fab few are raking in the big bucks, and making hundreds of their colleagues green with envy.

Below is the definitive list of those who made the biggest dough in 2012:

OMOTOLA JALADE-EKEINDE: Omosexy cashed out with her reality show ‘The Real Me’ for which she reportedly got paid a huge sum. She also featured in two big budget movies ‘Amina’and ‘Last Flight to Abuja’.

D’BANJ: Gone are the days when he made N10m in a week. These days, the superstar entertainer is making more businessdeals than hits, and the figures are amazing, from CRBTs to distribution, content syndication, and several non-music projects. Paid between N5 and N15 for engagements, and enjoying royalty returns from here, the UK and US, the former Mo’hits front man could soon be moving from the millionaires to the billionaires’ club.

PSQUARE: The twins probably made the most money this year jetting round Africa headlining sold out shows attended by thousands. Peter and Paul Okoye, whose billable hours attract close to double figures in the millions, also signed a distribution deal with Universal Music. With sold out gigs here and abroad, the brothers have built a wild following that makes sure promoters keep asking for them. Easily one of the highest paid Nigerian acts.

ALI BABA: When the revered comedian isn’t cracking people up on Twitter, he’s making big bucks consulting or compering events for multinationals, government or high net worth individuals.

GENEVIEVE NNAJI: The Nollywood actress is ahead of her peers, benefiting from endless endorsements (Loya, MUD, Range Rover etc) and reaping dividends from private businesses she’s keeping off public glare. Paid a mind-boggling figure to act in the movie adaptation of Chimamanda Adichie’s ‘Half of a Yellow sun’, Ms Nnaji rarely takes up movie roles these days. When she does, it must be worth it.

DAVIDO: The young son of billionaire businessman Deji Adeleke is making daddy proud earning his own money at the young age of 20. Davido who started out as a rookie less than two years ago now charges four to five million Naira to performat gigs and here’s the good part, he gets to perform at least three gigs in a week. Could be up to five, in seasons such as this. 2012 incomes include the N30m deal with MTN…

2FACE IDIBIA: If he didn’t make the list, wouldn’t you be scared? 2face started the year, releasing his fifth solo album and then embarked on a sponsored US tour. Charging as muchas $60,000 per show, Mr. Idibia was busy all year, headlining gigs all over. Investment in real estate and hospitality (including Club Rumours, in Ikeja, Lagos) also paid off.

DON JAZZY: The MAVIN Records boss signed a deal with Samsung Africa and broke bank with the Loya Milk deal. With his eyes firmly on the prize, the gifted producer moved beyondthe Mo’Hits beef to focus on pushing and monetizing MAVIN content, while expanding into fresh business areas. He’s penned a deal to produce the theme song for the Africa Cup ofNations holding in 2013… And the recently launched Pop Clubis a year-end addition that’ll sure bear fruits….

FUNKE AKINDELE: The actress-producer is still enjoying the success of ‘The Return of Jenifa’ from which she reportedly made over N30m. She has also been made the ambassador of Nigerian job websiteJobberman, a deal worth millions of Naira. That’s in addition to the endorsement deal with Telecoms Company GLO and the Lagos Inland Revenue Service.

WIZKID: The EME pop star this year made big bucks from his endorsement deal with carbonated soft drink Pepsi. Same for his deal with Star, for the all-star song. And all through the year, he stood as one of the highest paid acts, charging between N4m and N6.5m for performances here, and usually more, for gigs in Dubai, England and elsewhere…

IYANYA: Being his most promising year so far, Iyanya made quite a fortune off his ‘Kukere’ single. Performance fees doubled, tripled then doubled again, causing him to swim in millions. Just this year, he relocated to an expensive apartment in Lekki and bought for himself a Range Rover HSE.Next year should even be better.

BASKETMOUTH: Bright Okpocha’s transition from mere stand-up comic to events compere and TV host has the big bucks rolling in for him. His Globacom endorsement remains intact, and he’s delved heavily into show promotions here and abroad. There’s also the successful EmBARssy Lounge on Lagos mainland.

List was compiled by Osagie Alonge and Victoria Ige for The NET

Poverty, main driver of conflicts in Africa – Achebe

• Africa needs indigenous investment, not foreign aid
The fourth edition of the annual Chinua Achebe Colloquium has said that poverty, originating from leadership failure and bad governance, is the main cause of conflicts in the African continent, adding that what the continent needs is indigenous investment and not foreign aids.
The colloquium also raised concern that current security challenges and other acts of violence are a reflection of “deeper sociopolitical inequalities and pathologies. These were contained in resolution of the Colloquium released this week.
The colloquium, convened by Prof. Chinua Achebe, was held at the Brown University’s Perry and Marty Granoff Centre for the Creative Arts in the United States of America.

Man Issued 'query' For 'uncontrollable Flatulence' In The Workplace

..A Social Security Administration worker has been cited by his superiors for 'conduct unbecoming a federal officer,' relating to his 'uncontrollable flatulence' in the workplace.
The Maryland man, 38, was reportedly hit with a five-page reprimand Dec. 10 that included a meticulously-crafted log of specific dates and times when coworkers observed - or overheard - him 'releasing the awful and unpleasant odor' in his Baltimore office.
The letter's log reportedly cited 17 dates - and 60 times - in which he passed so much gas the resulting miasma created an' intolerable' and 'hostile' workplace environment for those around him. For example, the man’s Sept. 19 output included nine bouts of flatulence, starting at 9:45 a.m. and ending at 4:30 p.m. A trio of incidents preceded on Sept. 11.

PDP To CPC: You Are Too Blind To Notice Jonathan’s Achievements

The leading Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has lambasted opposition party, the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) over its comment on President Goodluck Jonathan’s speech on Christmas day, saying that the party would lead Nigeria to a senseless war if given the opportunity.

The PDP said: “President Jonathan has invested heavily in critical infrastructures such as power, road and rail transport, security, agriculture, education among others. While the maturity span of some of these infrastructure is long term and are expected to yield benefits in coming years, there is abundant evidence that steady gains are already crystalizing in sectors such as power, education and rail transport.

“The PDP met Nigeria a pariah state, retrieved and returned it to the centre stage of global reckoning. It is also on record that at a time the economy of the western nations was hobbled by the global melt down with banks collapsing, no bank in Nigeria suffered similar fate.

“Similarly, as part of the party’s strategy against corruption, the PDP liberalized the economy and threw the door open to generate new jobs. The party also established anti-corruption agencies, the EFCC and ICPC as well as enacted the Freedom of Information law to enhance transparency in governance. The party’s dispassion in winning the battle on corruption has seen even senior members of the party convicted for corruption.

”We must add, that our battle on corruption is total and that President Jonathan has won the most critical aspect of it which is against electoral corruption. Nigerians now go to the polls and are sure their votes will count””. There is no shorter road to good governance than when mandate and withdrawal of it depend entirely on the people,” the statement concluded.

Odemwingie Faces Life-ban From Super Eagles Over Comments

Super eagles player and West Brom playmaker, Osaze odemwingie has been slammed with a life ban from the super eagles after he posted some insultive comments on micro blogging website, Twitter.

Unhappy at being left out of the provisional 32-man squad that will begin camping in Faro this week, Osaze lashed out at head coach Stephen Keshi and the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF). Osaze had said that Keshi has no footballing reasons not to invite him to camp and criticized the way he found out about being dropped via the media rather than from the coach himself.
One top NFF official responded by saying that Osaze would not be allowed to go unpunished for insulting the NFF, Keshi and Super Eagles captain Joseph Yobo. He added that Osaze took matters too far with his outburst on Twitter and as such must pay for his actions.

According to NFF sources, Osaze's case will now be referred to the federation's disciplinary committee to investigate and make recommendations to the executive committee for the next line of action. He added: “Who does Osaze think he is that makes him think that he can abuse everybody and go unpunished?

“Well, he may think he does not need us because he also holds a European Union passport but we shall make a statement with the action we will take against him. We are 100 per cent in support of Keshi because we know he picked his team without any ill-feelings.”

Osaze meanwhile has conceded that being dropped from the Nations Cup squad effectively ends his international career. He added that it is just as well he was not invited to the Faro camp, as it is not ideal to play for a coach who does not want him.

Man Stabs 22 Children At Chinese Elementary School

BEIJING (AP) — A man wielding a knife wounded 22 children and one adult outside a primary school in central China as students were arriving for classes on Friday, the police said.

The attack, in the village of Chengping in Henan Province, happened shortly before 8 a.m., said a police officer from Guangshan County, where the village is located.

The attacker, Min Yingjun, 36, was subdued by security guards and taken into custody by the police, said the officer, who declined to give her name, which is customary among Chinese civil servants. Guards have been posted at schools across China after a spate of attacks in recent years.

A Guangshan County hospital administrator said there were no deaths among the nine students admitted to the hospital, although two badly wounded children were transferred to better-equipped hospitals outside the county.

A doctor at Guangshan’s hospital of traditional Chinese medicine said that seven students had been admitted there, but that none were seriously injured.

It was not clear how old the wounded children were, but Chinese primary school students are generally 6 to 11.

A notice on the Guangshan County government’s Web site confirmed the number of wounded and said an emergency response team had been set up to investigate the stabbings.

No motive was given for the attack, which resembled a string of similar assaults against Chinese schoolchildren in 2010 that killed nearly 20 and wounded more than 50. The most recent such attack took place in August, when a man broke into a middle school in the southern city of Nanchang and stabbed two students before fleeing.

Most of the attackers have been mentally disturbed men involved in personal disputes or unable to adjust to the rapid pace of social change in China, underscoring grave weaknesses in the antiquated Chinese medical system’s ability to diagnose and treat psychiatric illness.

In one of the worst attacks, a man described as an unemployed, middle-aged doctor killed eight children with a knife in March 2010 to vent his anger over a thwarted romantic relationship.

Two Nigerians have been arrested in Ghana for allegedly attempting to divert $13,978

Two Nigerians have been arrested for allegedly attempting to divert $13,978 belonging to, Ghanaian peacekeepers after they had succeeded in hacking into the e-mails of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF).

The suspects, Peter Okechukwu, 32, and Emmanuel Ifedi, 31, were arrested by officials of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service at a branch of the United Bank of Africa (UBA) in Accra where they had gone to cash the money.

According to the Director-General of the CID, Commissioner of Police Mr Prosper Agblor, in November this year the two suspects managed to enter the e-mails of Continental African Trading Limited (CATAL) and the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) GHANBATT 76 and intercepted all electronic communications between the two parties.

CATAL, an international organisation, had been supplying home appliances' to Ghanaian peacekeeping troops on various missions at different locations in the world.

Recently, CATAL was contacted, as usual, by the GAF to supply home appliances to UNIFIL GHANBATT 76 peacekeeping troops in Lebanon.

Mr Agblor said there was correspondence concerning the supply of the items between CATAL and the military through the Internet.

Along the line, he said, the e-mails between the GAF and CATAL were hacked into by the two Nigerians, who intercepted all mails from both ends and replied them as if the replies were coming from the rightful receivers of the e-mails.

He said the two suspects, using the identity of CATAL, sent an e-mail to the GAF instructing it to pay $13,978 into a UBA account number 01011651102235 as part payment for the supply of the goods.

Upon receipt of the information, the GAF transferred $13,978 into the account as instructed by the two suspects.

Mr Agblor said CATAL realized that the GAF had suddenly stopped communicating with the company on matters relating to the transfer of the money and so it followed up with a phone call and detected that the GAF had paid $13,978 into an account number supplied by CATAL.

He said it was at that stage that the two organisations realised that someone had hacked into their e-mails and quickly reported the issue to the Documentation and Visa Fraud Unit of the CID.

Mr Agblor said the Business Development Manager of CATAL reported the case to the police and checks at the bank revealed that the money had not yet been cashed by the suspects.

The police quickly mounted surveillance at the bank, awaiting the arrival of the suspects to cash the money.

According to the CID boss, on November 11, 2012, Okechukwu, who happened to be the owner of the said account, was arrested when he turned up at the bank to cash the amount.

Upon interrogation, the police said, Okechukwu admitted to the offence but mentioned Ifedi as the master brain behind the whole deal and led the police to Ifedi's house at Ashaley Botwe, an Accra suburb.

Mr Agblor said investigations were still ongoing, after which the two would be put before court.

16 Year Old Cable Vandal Survives Electrocution

MAKURDI — A 16-year-old boy, Terseer Iorparegh, was yesterday caught stuck in a high tension cable while attempting to vandalize the PHCN cable along Naka road in Makurdi.

Vanguard gathered from the Senior Special Assistant to Governor Gabriel Suswam on Public Utilities, Mr. Gaddafi Asemanya who was at the scene said residents of the area were woken up by shout of help from the young man around 2.am on Thursday only to behold the teenager hanging between the high tension cable after he had suffered shock and first degree burns

Asemanya said the teenager who had removed the lower cable climbed the PHCN pole to vandalize the upper cable when his leg touched a line which caused a spark and fire which spread over his body while he persistently shouted for help.

According to the governor’s aide, “vandalism of PHCN property has become a serious issue in Benue State, in the last one year. I have apprehended over 30 vandals, while some were prosecuted many of these persons were set free because PHCH has no legal team to ensure the prosecution of these suspects”, he said.
He explained that the residents had wanted to lynch the vandal but for his quick intervention and assistance by men of the fire service, the police and officers and men of the civil defence corps who were on hand to assist recover the vandal.

The Special Assitant further disclosed that the suspect was receiving medical attention at the Federal Medical Centre, Makurdi where he lied critically ill with no one coming to identify him.
Reacting, PHCN spokesman, Uche Oranya who appreciated the prompt action of the residents of the area, as well as that of the governor’s aide called on security operatives to ensure adequate safeguard of PHCN facilities in the state.

The legislators’ resolution of death sentence for terrorists was contained in the conference committee report of both chambers of the National Assembly, which harmonised a Bill for an Act to amend the Terrorism (prevention) Act 2011 and for other related matters.

5 Hot African Tech Start-ups To Watch In 2013

There has never been a more exciting time in Africa’s tech start-up community. The sector has reached an unprecedented level of maturity and growth. Africa’s techies and developers are no longer building mobile apps, software and websites just for the love of it; they are adopting a rather aggressive approach towards business planning, commercialization and profitability.

Take IrokoTV, for example. The digital distributor of Nigerian movies has famously been dubbed the ‘Netflix of Africa’. When it launched in December 2010, IrokoTV depended solely on Google’s partner program for all its revenue. Not anymore. In May this year, Jason Njoku, the company’s maverick founder, announced that the company would start charging users a $5 monthly subscription fee to access its entire movie catalogue.

Similarly, Nairaland.com, Africa’s largest discussion forum, historically depended solely on Google Ads for its revenue. It ditched Google Adwords a couple of months ago to start selling ads directly on its platform.

Commercialization aside, innovation still reigns supreme in Africa’s tech community. While some African techies are still developing leisure games and mobile applications (like the remarkable MALIYO Games, which creates casual browser games to share the experiences of everyday Africans with a global audience), others are creating disruptive new inventions that are providing solutions to some of the continent’s most pressing socioeconomic problems.

In my opinion, here are 5 spectacular African tech start-ups that are most likely to shake up the continent’s tech industry in 2013:

mVerified
mVerified is a Kenyan mobile and web-based app that verifies the authenticity of documents such as title deeds, car log books and graduation certificates in the course of transactions. The app simply works by checking the credentials of documents against data stored by Kenyan governmental agencies such as the Kenya Revenue Authority and the Kenya National Examinations Council. Documents that fail to correspond to official records are instantly flagged as potential counterfeits. mVerified can be accessed online via WAP or GPRS-enabled phones. While the system is free to download as an Android application, it costs roughly $7 to make a verification inquiry.

Mara Online
Mara was founded by Ugandan multi-millionaire tycoon Ashish J. Thakkar in 2012. Mara Online, which is Africa’s first online mentorship social network, connects young, budding African entrepreneurs to established, prominent enterprises and businessmen who serve as mentors. The mentors on the network transfer knowledge and experience to the upstart entrepreneurs in order to help them transform their ideas into sustainable enterprises.

Kuluya.com
Kuluya is a developer and publisher of online games based in Lagos, Nigeria. The startup develops Nigerian-centric games with substantial focus on African characters and themes. Kuluya already has over 100 games in its portfolio with such quirky titles as Monkey Run, Bush Meat and Zulu and Mosquito. Earlier this year Kuluya raised $250,000 from institutional investors. According to Loy Okezie, publisher of Techloy, arguably Africa’s most authoritative tech blog, Kuluya is poised to ‘provide an ultimate African gaming experience and change the continent’s gaming landscape.’ All Kuluya games are web browser games, for now.

BudgIT
BudgIT is a civic start-up developed by the team at Co-Creation Hub (CcHub), Nigeria’s premier tech incubator. The idea behind BudgIT is simple, yet profound: to make Nigerian government budgets & public data more understandable, accessible and transparent. BudgIT leverages an interactive platform and creative tools such as infographics and charts to break down government budget allocations in its simplest and most basic form to enable Nigerians at all levels to understand the budget better, thereby stimulating conversations about open governance, data transparency and citizen participation in governance.

CorruptionNET
Founded by Nimi Hoffmann, a South African social science graduate student at Oxford University, CorruptionNET is an open-source mobile platform that allows citizen reporters to file anonymous journalistic reports to newsrooms about corruption and abuse of public resources. Citizen reporters can report via SMS or MXit, an African social network.

The trouble with Abuja, Nigeria’s capital at 21

Bala-Mohammed

• Absence of full democracy in FCT Mayoralty worries natives
• Section 303 of constitution, avoided 13 years into democracy
• No political and administrative capital, 21 years after relocation
• Lagos, Kaduna and Port Harcourt as federal territories too, scuttled

TWENTY-ONE years to the day Abuja became the Federal Capital of the nation, the territory remains troubled.
The city from which almost everyone comes to take but not give back what it sorely needs has become a dream scuttled, at least going by the high hopes and expectations it had engendered at the beginning.
Curiously, Abuja, a name taken from the people of Niger State in 1976, has two major birthdays that the political leaders and bureaucrats who built the city hardly celebrate.
The capital of the federation, as a project, clocked 36 years on February 3, 2012 but no one, from the FCT administration to the Presidency remembered.
Then the relocation proper that Gen. Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB) actualised and legalised in the early hours of Thursday December 12, 1991 at the City Gate coined by the first newspaper in Abuja, Abuja Newsday, clocks 21 today.
It is understood that the Alhaji Bala Mohammed administration would like to do anything that was clear at press time as they did modestly last year’s December.
But beyond meretricious celebration, the 36 years old capital is still faced with huge challenges that simplicity of complying with constitutional provisions, notably on the federation capital would have solved.
This, however, is the origin of the major trouble with Abuja as Nigeria’s capital: Around 8.00 a.m. at the Presidential Wing of Lagos Airport on December 12 1991, the then Head of State realised that the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) he was moving into had neither administrative nor political structures to run, even the city’s (municipal) government beyond the then Decree. No. 6 of 1976 (now FCT ACT) which provision was merely about the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) and the powers of the FCT minister and a few provisions about land use and allocation.
And pronto at the airport, the artful Gen. Babangida told journalists that his administration would, on getting to Abuja, promulgate a decree that would define the political and administrative structure of the Territory.
It will be recalled that what the then military president did was that in February 1993, he constituted an 11-man Presidential Committee on the Future Administration of Abuja headed by the then Justice of the Court of Appeal, Justice Mamman Nasir while the Secretary was an FCDA Director, then Alhaji Abdullahi Ganduje (now Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, Deputy Governor of Kano State). Of the 11-man panel Justices AFD Kuti (Lagos) and Justice Paul Nwokedi (Anambra) from FCT Judicial Division then were the only two members from the South. Abuja Newsday, had then called the panel ‘kangaroo panel on Abuja’ for which the editor then was arrested.
The panel submitted its report in April 1993 but it was never implemented before Babangida ‘stepped aside’ on August 26, 1993. Sadly today, 24 years on, there is no semblance of that law to regulate FCT’s bureaucracy as promised by Babangida who hurriedly left office.
Not even the democracy that has survived for 14 years has brought about the political and administrative structure that Section 303 of the 1999 Constitution as amended provides. for .
An example: Section 303 provides: The Federal Capital Territory, Abuja shall comprise six area councils and the administrative and political structure thereof shall be as provided by an Act of the National Assembly.
This Section represents what General Babangida promised the nation at the Lagos Airport in 1991, which he did not fulfill. And about 14 years into Nigeria’s democracy that has produced three elected Presidents and many FCT Committee Chairmen and members in both Chambers of the National Assembly, there is no such law for the undemocratic structure that FCT has been. It is a paradox of development that the current National Assembly doubles as the legislature for the FCT courtesy of Section 299 (a) of the 1999 Constitution.
Curiously, Section 302 of the Constitution makes the President the Governor of the FCT and the Vice President the Deputy Governor.
But none of them pays attention to substances about the FCT beyond appointing FCT minister(s) that they devolve powers to according to the Constitution, which provides that:
Section 299 (a) provides: references to the Governor, Deputy Governor and the executive council of a state (howsoever called) were references to the President, Vice President and the executive council of the federation (howsoever called) respectively;
Section 302: The President may, in exercise of his powers conferred upon him by section 147 of the Constitution, appoint for the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja a minister who shall exercise such powers and perform such functions as may be delegated to him by the President, from time to time.
The Guardian recalls that during the last presidential campaigns from February to April, 2011, which incidentally ended at the Eagle Square, Abuja, the President and the Vice President did not say a word about Abuja.
Besides, as Nigerians mark the 21st anniversary of the capital relocation to Abuja without fanfare, inquiries also revealed that most of the details in the mission statement of the founding father, Gen. Murtala Muhammed who was assassinated barely 10 days after he proclaimed Abuja as Nigeria’s capital, have not been fulfilled.
One of the strategic details Gen. Muhammed promised the nation was making Lagos, Kaduna, and Port Harcourt, Commercial Capital and Special Areas respectively to reduce pressure on Abuja. His words that his successors have continually ignored:
“…Lagos will, in the foreseeable future, remain the nation’s commercial capital
and one of its nerve centres. But in terms of servicing the present
infrastructure alone the committed amount of money and effort required will
be such that Lagos State will not be ready to cope.
“It will even be unfair
to expect the state to bear this heavy burden on its own. It is therefore
necessary for the Federal Government to continue to sustain the substantial
investment in the area. The port facilities and other economic activities in
the Lagos area have to be expanded.
“There is need in the circumstances for the Federal Government to maintain a special defence and security
arrangement in Lagos which will henceforth be designated a special area.
These arrangements will be carefully worked out and written into the new
constitution. Kaduna and Port Harcourt are to be accorded similar status and
designated as Special Areas…”
Ironically, only last month at the South West Town-hall meeting on the constitution review process, leaders including former Lagos State governor, Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu, called for “special status for Lagos. No one remembered in the South-South and the North-West zones what Gen. Murtala’s vision would have accomplished for them. This call resurfaces as Lagos residents have been wondering about why most of the federal roads that pass through Lagos including critical ones that link the ports to the rest of the country are impassable.”
What is more, today, one of the worst spectacles in Lagos is the stretch of road from the International Airport through Ajao Estate and Mafoluku areas.
It is a federal road that Lagos has not been allowed to beautify to cover a national shame. Whenever the heavens open, the areas are water-logged and most of the sideways are unsightly, except for the hotels and banks premises that are well kept.
Another promise Gen. Muhammed’s successors have failed to fulfill is the neutrality of the Federal Capital, which was the blight the opposition then had against Lagos.
They had alleged Lagos was dominated by the Yoruba.
In Abuja today, the original inhabitants who Justice Akinola Aguda recommended should be compensated and resettled elsewhere are the ones complaining about marginalisation.
The FCT Minister, Senator Bala Mohammed disclosed recently that the Federal government required a whopping N145 billion to resettle the original inhabitants in the Territory 36 years on and 21 years after relocation from Lagos.
It is curious that since 1976, there has been no minister of southern extraction for the FCT apart from Ajose Adeogun who was designated Federal Commissioner (Special Duties 1976-1979) and had responsibility to supervise FCT from (Suleja Field Base and 15 Awolowo Road, Ikoyi, Office of FCDA) by the then Murtala/Obasanjo administration.
All other southerners have been Ministers of State. This was up to the last cabinet when Captain Caleb Olubolade was minister of State FCT, for a brief period as he was deployed from Special Duties in the presidency. Throughout the eight years of Chief Obasanjo and three years of Alhaji Umaru Musa Yar’Adua as president, nobody from the South was appointed FCT Minister and for one year that Dr. Goodluck Jonathan was president before he was sworn in, no one from the South was good enough to be FCT Minister. They were good only as ministers of State. It was anticipated that the jinx would be broken when President Jonathan was sworn-in in May 2011 as some candidates from the South were listed as possible successor to Bala Mohammed. But then Senator Bala from Bauchi was retained and Oloye Olajumoke Akinjide from Oyo state, was as usual appointed FCT Minister of state.
Before the last cabinet was constituted, The Guardian was told that specifically, the FCT tagged “Centre of Unity” became a battle ground, which created disunity among the president’s men. We gathered that while some of the president’s “Inner Circle” members are insisting that the FCT plum portfolio this time should go to the South after 35 years of existence then, some top politicians in the North were fiercely fighting that since the portfolio had always been zoned to the North, it should remain so. There were dark hints then that the immediate past minister, Senator Bala Mohammed had been ‘anointed’ by a member of the first family to return to his old portfolio for inscrutable reasons.
Besides, despite the fact that the current FCT Minister hails from North East, Bauchi State, the current Executive Secretary of the FCDA Engr. Adamu Ismaila is from the North East (Adamawa).
One other trouble that seems intractable remains noise from churches and mosques in the Territory that the authorities seem incapable of dealing with. Today in Abuja most residents are already feeling the pains of noise pollution from churches and mosques in the residential areas as the Federal and FCT agencies that deal with such environmental challenges look on as this nuisance goes on with rampaging impunity.
One of the attractions the Aguda Panel advertised to the nation then while marketing the new capital gospel was multi-access possibilities as there would be no room for traffic jam, one of the strong points against Lagos as Nigeria’s capital. But today, Abuja is fast getting into congestion ambush.
A corollary to the myriad of challenges that the Nigeria’s capital has had is absence of democratic structures in the operation of the Territory. In the Territory today, it is only the six Area Councils that have elected leaders. The constitution has already foreclosed gubernatorial election in the area. But the natives had two months ago submitted a memorandum to the constitution review committee on the expediency of reviewing Sections 299-303 of the constitution that will allow the residents to elect their Mayor as it is done in most modern capitals such as London, Washington, Beijing, Berlin, etc. They also called for creation of a Mayoral Council that will wrest legislative authorities on FCT from the National Assembly.
But as an analyst told The Guardian Tuesday night in Lagos in an interview, “the most fitting tribute that the presidency can pay to the memory of the founding fathers of Abuja is to fulfil the Murtala dream of making Lagos, Nigeria’s Commercial Capital and designate Kaduna and Port Harcourt Special Areas.”
What the FCT authorities use today in the absence of an enabling law is a 2004 Presidential Order enacted by the then President Olusegun Obasanjo when the FCT Ministry was scrapped by the administration under Malam Nasir el-Rufai as FCT Minister.
This is the reality 36 years of FCT as a project idea and 21 years after relocation from Lagos.

Boko Haram: Jonathan Asks U.S To Help Nigeria

President Goodluck Jonathan has made a passionate appeal to the United States government to help the federal government in the bid to tackle the security morass the country is enmeshed in, following the gory activities of the Islamic extremist group, Boko Haram.
According to the president, "Nigeria is facing various security challenges, such as Boko Haram, policing the nation’s extensive maritime borders, crude oil theft and kidnapping", adding that the USA government must "support the Government’s efforts to find lasting solutions to these problems".
Jonathan made this appeal to General Carter Ham, Commander of the United States’ Africa Command (AFRICOM) who paid him a courtesy call at the presidential villa, Abuja, as part of activities marking his presentation of a paper at the National Defence College, Abuja.

"We appreciate the commitment of the United States to assist in ensuring that the world is safe and secure", the president told Ham, even as he congratulated President Barrack Obama on his re-election and commended the smooth US elections.

Informing Gen. Ham of his visit to Mali and the efforts by ECOWAS to resolve the conflict in that country, Jonathan noted that the situation could still be contained if the right steps are taken quickly.

Gen. Carter Ham, Commander of AFRICOM had earlier said he seized the opportunity to present a paper at the National Defence College to hold talks with security agencies on ways to strengthen the partnership between Nigerian and American forces.

He said the USA was ready to cooperate with Nigeria in areas such as maritime security, communications, development of civil-military capabilities, and resolving the conflict in Mali.

Ham commended Nigeria’s Defence College for the harmonious working relationship between military personnel and civilians with participants from neighbouring countries on security issues.

Christmas/New Year Celebrations: Jonathan Seeks N161bn To Avert Fuel Scarcity

President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday sought approval from the National Assembly for a supplementary budget of N161.6bn in the 2012 fiscal period, an amount meant to avert fuel scarcity during the festive yuletide.
Jonathan’s request, coming barely two weeks to the end of 2012 fiscal year, was conveyed in a letter read on both floors of the Senate and House of Representatives by Senate President David Mark, and Speaker Aminu Waziri Tambuwal respectively.
The president explained that the additional request emanated from a forensic audit which revealed that the N888.1billion provided for fuel subsidy in the 2012 budget was not enough.
He added that while the sum of N880.1billion had been paid out for subsidy, leaving a balance of N7.7billion.
The letter reads in part: “You will recall that, as part of the 2012 budget framework, a provision of N888.1 billion was made for payment of fuel subsidy for the nation. I wish to intimate the distinguished Senate of the fact that, following the forensic audit carried out, the provision for fuel subsidy in the 2012 budget was underestimated. “As at now, the sum of N880,264,243,683:61 billion has been paid out, leaving a balance of N7, 735, 756, 316: 39 billion.
“In order to accommodate the outstanding arrears resulting from the forensic audit exercise and the remaining period of the 2012, an additional sum of N161, 617, 364, 911billion over and above what was programmed in the 2012 framework is required.
“Given the need to maintain a steady flow of petroleum products, especially in the run-up to the festive season, it is my hope that the distinguished senators will kindly accord this request their traditional expeditious consideration and approval,” he said.

We’ve Not Abandoned Subsidy Report – Tambuwal
Meanwhile, Tambuwal said yesterday that the House had not abandoned the fuel subsidy report.
Tambuwal gave this assurance during a courtesy visit on him by officials of the Anti-Corruption Network, an NGO led by former lawmaker, Dino Melaye.
LEADERSHIP recalls that the House had, after an emergency session on January 8, conducted a probe of the fuel subsidy regime in the country following which some oil companies were indicted. But little is heard of the matter these days after the lawmaker heading the probe committee, Farouk Lawan, was accused of receiving bribes, prompting fears that the House were cooling off the issue.
Tambuwal, however, said, “We have not abandoned the subsidy report. Anyone who thinks we have abandoned it is wasting his time,” he said, insisting that all those involved in the scam would be prosecuted.
The Speaker identified corruption as one of the fundamental problems confronting the country, and said that legislators were doing their best “as a House to address the issue.”
Lamenting that efforts being made by the House to fight corruption were not being supported by some agencies, he, however, assured the NGO that all the issues raised by it were receiving the attention of the House. Melaye had urged the House to remove the immunity clause from the 1999 Constitution in the ongoing review, saying do so would make public office holders live above board. He also called for the separation of the offices of the attorney-general and the minister of justice
Tambuwal commended the NGO over its campaign for a corruption-free country and expressed the willingness of the House to collaborate with it and other like-minded organisations.

Govs take FG to S’Court over subsidy deductions
In a separate development, the 36 state governors have asked the Supreme Court to compel the federal government to give account of all subsidy claims deducted from the federation account from 2007 till date, and to also pay back into the federation account all such deductions.
The governors accused the federal government of making a total N3.7 trillion expenditure on fuel subsidy between 2006 and 2011, saying the trial will prove the accuracy of this figure.
A team of six lawyers, including Joseph Bodunrin Daudu (SAN) and Prince Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), that approached the apex court on behalf of the attorneys-general of Abia State and his counterparts from the other 35 states, named the attorney-general of the federation (AGF) and the National Assembly as co-defendants.
The plaintiffs said that the federal government not only lacked constitutional power to make the deductions, but that the illegal directives it gave the Petroleum Products Pricing and Regulatory Agency (PPPRA) gave the agency the opportunity to honour unverified vouchers from importers of petroleum products to the detriment of all the plaintiffs.
The 36 governors requested the apex court to make “a restitutionary order directing the federal government to pay to the plaintiffs their 24 percent share of the total amount of money wrongly deducted by the federal government from the federation account from 2007 till date.”
In their statement of claims, the plaintiffs averred that when they collect revenues, they make such remittance without making any form of deductions from the revenue so collected despite the fact that they also incurred expenses in the course of collecting and remitting the revenue to the federal government.
The plaintiffs said at the trial that they would rely on reports and other accounts provided by the Ministry of Finance, office of the Accountant General, CBN, Budget Office, NNPC, DPR, FIRS, PPPRA and the Petroleum Support Fund Guidelines “to ascertain and determine the quantum of revenue which should have accrued to them but which have not, due to the unwholesome and unconstitutional practice of the defendants.”
Querying the method of payment, the governors stated that “ the Federal Government between 2006 and 2011 has shown a tendency to make extra budgetary appropriations not approved by the (National Assembly).
“Therefore over the last few years there has been a disparity in relation to the amounts appropriated for fuel subsidy payments in the national budget and the actual payments made in those calendar years.”
The governors averred that there were inaccuracies in the crude oil and gas revenues remitted to the Federation Account by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) caused by wrongful deductions at source by the NNPC to fund her operations.
Referring to a November 22, 2010 report of the Federal Ministry of Finance, entitled “the Interim Report on the Process of Forensic Review of NNPC”, the governors contended that the actual remittance of proceeds for domestic crude sales to the Federation Account was far less than the amount expected.
The plaintiffs averred that the practice of paying the fuel subsidy from the crude oil account by the NNPC with the authority and approval of the AGF was “unconstitutional” and a “ flagrant contravention of Section 162(1) of the 1999 Constitution because crude oil money ought to be remitted with zero deductions into the federation account.”
They averred that as a result of deliberate delays of receipts of subsidy advice from PPPRA, which normally results in under-remittance of domestic crude sales proceeds into the federation account, there was over deduction in 2007, 2008 and 2009 which was estimated at N2 billion, 10,3 billion and 16.2 billion respectively.
The governors accused the federal government of using the NNPC to deduct, without approval, the fuel subsidy claim from source as if same is a first line charge, an action, they described as illegal and contrary to the provisions of Section 80 and 162(1) of the 1999 Constitution as amended.
The plaintiffs accused the NNPC of usurping the functions of the PPPRA as the latter was made to honour unverified vouchers from importers of petroleum products.
Consequently, they urged the apex court to declare federal government’s actions in this unconstitutional, unlawful, null and void and to make “a perpetual order of injunction restraining the federal government or its agents from making any further deductions from the amount standing to the credit of the federation account for the purpose of funding the payment of the fuel subsidy claims or any other purpose whatsoever, except those authorized by section 162 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

Govs want $1bn from excess crude account
Governors of the 36 states of the federation yesterday demanded for the release of 1 billion US dollars from the excess crude account to enable them pay for contracts executed and on-going ones.
The governor made the demand, despite a lingering legal action still pending before the Supreme Court between them and the federal government of the excess crude account.
The governors made this demand at the National Economic Council (NEC) meeting at the Presidential Villa. The Nigeria Governors’ Formula (NGF) had on Monday night met at the Rivers state Governors’ Lodge where they resolved to make the demand.
The governors argued that the $1 billion from the excess crude account became necessary to assist them pay debts owed contractors and complete ongoing ones.
According to Deputy Governor of Sokoto state, Alhaji Mukhtari Shagari, the governor’s demand was already being considered and a decision would be taken after legal counsel has been sought and given by Justice Minister and Attorney General of the Federation, Mohammed Adoke since the matter was still pending before the apex court.
Briefing State House Correspondents after the meeting alongside his Ekiti and Ebonyi counterparts, Gombe State Governor, Ibrahim Dankwambo hinted that NEC deliberated on the level of negotiations between federal government and the states on the rift bordering on the true status on of the excess crude account.
He said, “It was advised that negotiation should continue pending the court decision on the matter”.
He further disclosed that NEC’s findings revealed that about N100billion was still needed to pay all outstanding subsidy claims.

Don’t Post NYSC Members To Schools; They Cause Mass Failure- Teachers Council

The Teachers Council has said that the mass failure witnessed in various examinations for primary and secondary school students is partly caused by the youth corps members who are posted to teach without being qualified.

The Teachers’ Registration Council of Nigeria, TRCN, on Tuesday, said authorities of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, should stop deployment of corps members, who lack basic knowledge of teaching, to teach in schools.

The Director of Operations of the Council, Steve Nwokocha, made the declaration at the maiden induction/graduation of 118 Professional Diploma in Education graduates held at the Federal College of Education, Osiele, Abeokuta.

He said the deployment of unqualified teachers, like the youth corps members, contributed to the mass failure being witnessed in the country in recent years.

“The issue of having mass failure is a process. Part of the people contributing to the process are these corpers. It is an abuse to our profession,” he said.

“Government should stop posting youth corpers to teach in schools. We at the council are against posting of NYSC without teaching background to schools,” he added.

Mr. Nwokocha argued that only graduates of education should be posted to schools, saying the council was ready to rid the country of quack and fake teachers.

“What we are saying is that NYSC should make sure that only corps members who read education should be deployed to schools. Our council is against the deployment of graduates to schools,” he emphasised.

Majority of the hundreds of thousands of graduates who partake in the NYSC program annually are posted to schools to teach.

In a related development, Mr. Nwokocha disclosed that the council has established a Teachers Tribunal across all states in the country to deal with erring professional teachers.

He said the tribunal composition comprises of 5 members, including one from a University; one from a College of Education; and three nominated by Commissioners for Education, one of which must be a lawyer.

He stated that the Tribunal is working in conjunction with the Attorney General of the Federation, which further makes it legal and constitutional

Mr. Nwokocha stated that the body, being the Africa headquarters, enjoyed adequate recognition at the international scene. He said graduates of other disciplines must undergo the programme before they could be recognized as a qualified teacher.

He threatened that schools who failed to comply with the body’s directives could have their programmes de-registered.

The council leader said the council now directly receives the names of graduates from their respective institutions in order to ensure only qualified teachers are employed.

The Deputy Provost of the College of Education, Bolatito Adeniyi, who represented the Provost, said the programme was to formally initiate the fresh graduates into the teaching profession.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education and Technology, Ishola Ambali, advised the council on the need to publicise their activities regularly as it will serve as a medium to educate people.

Mr. Ambali, who represented the commissioner, also advised on need for the body to make it mandatory for government to ask for registration certificate obtained from the council before anyone is employed into the teaching service.

Boko Haram causes 1,000 Nigerians to flee to Niger Republic as refugees

Boko Haram causes 1,000 Nigerians to flee to Niger Republic as refugees
More than 1,000 Nigerians have fled to neighbouring Niger after six people were killed in an attack on their village blamed on Islamist group Boko Haram, the United Nations said Thursday.

The 1,042 refugees crossed the northern border into the Niger region of Diffa after the November 30 attack, and have been taken in by families in two villages near the regional capital, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said in a bulletin.

A teacher in the village confirmed the attack to local media. He said the attackers told villagers they were looking for “politicians” and “coldly killed” six people, including a police officer, after the victims were unable to recite verses of the Koran.

A security source said Niger’s army has deployed reinforcements along its border with Nigeria, a focus of worry for Nigerien authorities who have often assured they are taking measures to stop Boko Haram’s activities from spilling over into Niger.

Violence linked to the Boko Haram insurgency in Nigeria — a country roughly divided between a mainly Muslim north and a predominantly Christian south — is believed to have left some 3,000 people dead there since 2009, including killings by the security forces.

Woman In Trouble After Thugs She Hired To Beat Boyfriend Kill Him

The suspect, Mrs. Tawa RawanThe suspect, Mrs. Tawa Rawan
A 22-year old woman, Mrs. Tawa Rawan, has landed in big trouble. That was after she sent thugs to beat up her secret lover, Akeem Ganiyu, 25, at their Bariga area, Lagos State, Southwest Nigeria, over a disagreement.
The thugs misfired and instead of beating up Ganiyu, as directed by Rawan, they ended up killing him after inflicting several machete cuts on his body. She was arrested by the police for her alleged involvement in the murder.
The police also arrested her accomplices, identified as Joshua Damilola, 27, Akintude Sodiq, 25 and 17-year old Ismaila Riliwan. The fourth accomplice, Abiodun Adeleke, is on the run.
The incident happened at the victim’s house at 91, Arobadele Street, Bariga Lagos.
Narrating the incident, Rawan, mother of two kids, said she had a quarrel with the deceased and he slapped her and took away the money she made from bread sales.

The suspected thugs
According to her, she contacted those men to help her recover her money and to avenge the assault on her and not to kill Ganiyu. She said she was still shocked that he was killed in the process.
On her relationship with the late Ganiyu, she said he was her lover and that she is from Oyo State and married to another man with kids.
P.M.NEWS gathered that while she was still with her husband, she was also dating other men, including Ganiyu secretly.
On the day of the incident, she said that the late Ganiyu assaulted her and since she could not overpower him, she went and brought the suspects who eventually murdered him.
According to her, she actually sent those men to harrass and beat Ganiyu up and not to kill him.
“I did not ask them to kill him, only to harass and beat him. I later learnt that they killed him with a machete,” she said.
One of the suspects, Damilola, told P.M.NEWS that they did not intend to kill him, but used the machete after he attacked them with bottle.
“We went to ask him his problem with Rawan. Instead of anwering us, he snatched a broken bottle and stabbed me,” he stated.
He said he went to the bread factory and brought a machete and inflicted injury that resulted in Ganiyu’s death.
He also described Rawan as one of his customers at the bakery.
“I am at a loss on what to do and I don’t know how I am going to get out of this,” he cried at the station.
Another suspect, Sodiq, confessed that Rawan was also her lover but that he did not take part in the fighting.
When P.M.NEWS visited the victim’s residence in Bariga, the late Ganiyu’s sister expressed shock over the death of his brother and said that she had left everything in the hands of God.
A witness told P.M.NEWS that the late Ganiyu sustained several injuries on his body following the machete attack on him, adding that he died because he lost too much blood.
The body has been deposited at the Gbagada General Hospital for autopsy.
At the SCID, where the matter was transferred, P.M.NEWS gathered that the matter was being investigated by the same officer who investigated a murder case against a Divisional Police Officer, DPO, in Lagos.
Police sources also told P.M.NEWS that the suspects would soon be charged to court for conspiracy and murder.
Ganiyu’s sister, Nafisat Ismail, who sells bread at his 91, Arobadade residence, demanded for the release of her brother’s corpse so that he could be given a decent burial like a true Muslim.
She said their aged parents who are farmers in Iseyin, Oyo State, southwest Nigeria, were in support of her decision because as a Muslim, Akeem’s burial should not be unnecessarily delayed.
